Dangerous Driving at Highland

With the cold weather, we have suddenly seen some very dangerous, and illegal, driving practices at drop off and pick up.
For example:
  • Eastbound drivers crossing the road to park on the opposite side of the street when headed towards Crawford Ave on Payne St.
  • Car doors opened on the far side of Payne St with children popping out and running into the street without looking either way.
  • A significant amount of double parking and even cars stopping in the intersection to let children out.
  • Children exiting cars on the side of the car away from the sidewalk, getting out directly into the street.

Safety is everyone’s responsibility. Snow and ice make it even more important to slow down and use extra caution, whether you’re behind the wheel or crossing the street. It is never so cold or snowy that a child cannot walk a few extra steps to the school door. Parking directly in front of the entrance is not necessary. It is far more important to keep all children safe than to save a minute or two. A little snow on a coat is manageable; a child hit by a car is not.

Please do your part by following all traffic laws: stay on the correct side of the street, do not double-park, drive the correct direction through the one-way front lot, and use crosswalks when crossing the street. Together, we can keep our students — and one another — safe.
